Classic 5-Day Professional Fresco Workshop

 

The first class of this format took place in 1997 and was taught 4 times per year, since then hundreds of students have attended the workshop enrolling from US, Canada, Europe. This fresco workshop has also traveled to other US cities. Following it's success many new classes and and advanced programs were implemented by The Fresco School and currently our Classic 5-day Professional Fresco Workshop takes place twice per year at the Fresco School in Los Angeles during Fall and Spring sessions.

Classic 5-day Professional Fresco Workshop is designed for the professional artist on a budget with busy schedule. Classes start on First Wednesday of November and First Wednesday of March and end on the following Sunday. This workshop takes place in Los Angeles at The Fresco School.

Class size is limited to maximum of 6 people. You will be taught by two instructors (iLia Anossov - fresco painting, Ian Hardwick - fresco plaster) who are present on every day of the class. You will work/learn/practice:
 
Day 1

Introduction, Cartoon, Tools & Materials

9:30 AM till 5 PM

  • Introduction to fresco - terminology, definitions, etc. Differences between Fresco Wall, Fresco Panel and Fresco Tile. (There is NO difference in chemical process that takes place while you paint in buon fresco whether it as a wall, a panel or a tile. However methods of plaster application and painting slightly differ - we will study that during the workshop).
  • Cartoon - we will learn about Large Fresco Cartoon, review, adjust and refine cartoons that you brought, make tracings and prepare for painting days. (you must come with your own cartoons (drawings) to any of our workshops. Please study "Small Fresco Cartoon Article" and have them prepared.
  • Traditional Buon Fresco Tools & Materials - you will be introduced to a wide range of fresco materials and tools, their use and sources.
Day 2

Pigments & Colors, Fresco Tiles - Plaster

9:30 AM till 5 PM

  • Pigments & Colors - we will learn about traditional fresco pigments, it's grinding and storing, prepare and test fresco paints.
  • Fresco Tiles - Introduction to Fresco Plaster - we will prepare and condition 16X16 ceramic tiles for fresco painting.
Day 3

Fresco Tiles - Painting

9:30 AM till 5 PM

  • Mix paints
  • Apply Intonaco plaster to the tiles we prepared on the previous day
  • Transfer Cartoons onto a fresh Intonaco
  • Paint our first fresco
Day 4

Fresco Plaster Coats

Fresco Giornata Line

9:00 AM till 5:30 PM

  • 7 fresco plaster coats with individual instruction by fresco plasterer - mortar mixing and application. Several panels are provided for each student to practice each layer of plaster
  • Fresco Giornata - we will practice cutting and mending of the giornata line.
  • We will learn how to prepare Fresco Panels and walls
Day 5

Fresco Panel - Painting

9:00 AM till 5:30 PM

  • Mix paints
  • Intonaco plaster will be applied by our Plastering instructor to the 24X24 Fresco Panels provided by Fresco School.
  • Transfer Cartoons onto a fresh Intonaco
  • Paint a fresco

"6-Day Private Class"
and set your own time!

Enrollment is limited to 6 students per class.

Reservation/Registration (R/R) Fee - $125.00

Reservation/Registration fee of $125.00 is due upon submission of the enrollment application. The fee is not refundable, unless the class is canceled by us.

Enrollment applications should be submitted via Online Enrollment Application Form - You will need to fill up an online form (click here).

On submission you will be automatically redirected to the "Tuition Payment Center" where you will be able choose:

  • make payment in full ($125 registration fee waived)
  • make deposit payment
  • reserve your place in class by paying Registration Fee

And submit your payment via secure credit card payment system.

It is "OK" to submit applications without registration fee - just select "Please contact me about the payment" or "Mailing List Only" option in the form, however applications submitted without reservation/registration fee are treated as "please-add-to-mailing-list" requests and your place in class is not guaranteed until the fee is paid.

"3 day Introduction to Fresco Workshop"
This is also a much more frequent class and the dates might fit your schedule better.

Classic 5-Day Fresco Workshop Tuition Cost:

Tuition Cost (all materials included) - $2225

Tuition Payments must be received by The Fresco School a minimum of 30 calendar days prior to workshop (unless other payment arrangements made with the Fresco School). If the tuition is paid in full at the time of the registration (enrollment application submission) and a minimum of 30 days prior to the workshop we will waive the Reservation/Registration Fee.

NOTE: If circumstances prevent you from coming to the class on scheduled date and the tuition payment is made - you can always contact our office and we will transfer your enrollment to the next available class. You will loose nothing.

Refunds:

Registration/Reservation Fee - Non Refundable

Tuition Payments:

25 calendar days prior to the date of the class - less $425.00
15 calendar days prior to the date of the class - less $850.00
less then 14 days prior to the date of the class - no refund.

The Highlights of Los Angeles Fresco Workshop is a Fresco & Mural Restoration Seminars with Nathan Zakheim - leading fresco and mural conservator and restorer and Mural Painting Seminars with Kent Twitchell (muralist, LA Chamber Orchestra Mural, LA Marathon Mural) of Mural & Fresco Painting Academy.


 


Introductory Level Classes


Each student will be painting in the true fresco technique, working on the wet plaster. This workshop will introduce students to principals of fresco painting without going into professional details and applications. After this workshop student will be able to create small decorative buon frescoes.
